The airman medical exam, also called the flight physical, verifies that a pilot’s health meets FAA standards to safely operate an aircraft. It is required for any pilot seeking or renewing a medical certificate.
Dr. Medina Galvan is FAA-designated to administer Class 1, 2, and 3 physicals and submits results directly to the FAA through MedXpress while you are still in the office.
This is an occupational screening exam. It is not a replacement for your annual preventive physical, and we are not treating medical conditions at this visit.

Assuming your 8500-8 is already filed, three things.
A valid government-issued photo ID. If this is a renewal, bring your previous medical certificate as well.
If you wear corrective lenses daily, wear them in or bring them with you for the vision screening.
Cash or a credit card, due at the visit. Your $100 deposit comes off the total. We do not file with insurance.
Important to Know
File it through MedXpress and email us the confirmation number and a copy before you come in. Dr. Medina cannot perform your exam without it on file, and turning up without it means turning around.
We need 24 hours’ notice to reschedule. An exam cancelled with less notice will not be rescheduled, and a $100 no-show fee applies.
These add a $50 administrative fee, and more importantly they add time. Tell us when you schedule so we book the room for long enough to do it properly.
Cash and credit cards, due at the visit. We do not bill insurance for flight physicals, and no insurer covers them anyway.
Plan for about 45 minutes total. That covers triage, the physical exam, and getting everything entered into the computer. Fill out your MedXpress form before you come in and the visit moves fast.
Your exam is submitted to the FAA through MedXpress before you leave - you walk out with it filed. When everything is straightforward, your certificate is issued at the visit. If anything needs a deferral or special issuance, I'll tell you exactly what's needed and what the timeline looks like - no surprises.
Yes - ATC exams are paid for directly by the FAA, so there's no exam cost to you. We do keep a credit card on file, and it's only charged if you cancel within 24 hours of your appointment. Call the office to set one up.
Bring your records - progress notes from your treating doctor dated within 90 days of your exam, plus a medication list. Most common conditions qualify for a CACI, which means I can issue your certificate at the visit without an FAA deferral. CACI documentation is a flat $50, whether you have one condition or several.
A deferral isn't a denial - the FAA just wants more information. I'll tell you exactly what they're asking for, help you gather it, and submit it. Most deferred cases resolve once the FAA gets complete records.
The FAA doesn't publish one simple approved list - it depends on the medication, the condition, and how stable it is. Bring your full medication list and I'll tell you at the visit whether anything needs extra documentation. If you started something new, don't stop it before the exam - just tell me.
Not passing doesn't ground you. The test we use is the Waggoner, an FAA-approved computerized test done on an iPad in the office, and if you don't pass, you can take it one more time. If it's still not passing, I can usually still issue your certificate that day with a limitation like no night flying, and the FAA has a review process that can lift that limitation later - including taking one of the other FAA-approved tests at a clinic that offers them, since passing any approved test counts. Either way, you'll leave knowing exactly where you stand.
